Used as an artificial sweetener in soft drinks, Aspartame is widely considered the worst of any artificial sweetener you could put into your body. There have been claims about it including (but not limited to) :
- Its toxic to your body
- Can cause cancer
- Responsible for headaches
- Weight gain
But is any of the above true? Well let’s look at the facts.
Aspartame is made up of two amino acids (building blocks of protein), L-aspartic acid & L-phenylalanine, both of which are naturally occurring in the human body- not exactly toxic then.
The studies that have shown Aspartame to be cancerous were carried out on rodents. So, has very little to no relevance to human consumption. And the dosage amount giving to the rodents? Well, it was the equivalent amount of drinking 10,000 cans of Coke in one go!
As far as weight gain? Well, this all comes down to calorie consumption. If you drink fizzy juice and are gaining weight, it’s because you’re in a calorie surplus, not because you are consuming Aspartame.
Headaches? Most likely down to poor diet. If you reach for a fizzy drink and poor quality foods before you do a glass of water or healthy foods, you’re more likely to have headaches.
So, for the time being at least, there is no reason to stress over the Aspartame in your soft drinks, just enjoy them as part of a healthy, balanced & calorie conscious lifestyle.
